Todos Santos fiesta in Andahuaylillas.

Todos Santos fiesta in Andahuaylillas.

We got up early to see the Sunday market day in Pisaq. We stopped in Andahualillas to see an old Baroque Jesuit church being fixed up. (If it ain’t Baroque, don’t fix it.)  I almost got squirted as I cycled passed a man peeing while he was walking down the middle of a cobblestone street. This is Todos Santos, All Saint’s Day, which is a major holiday together with tomorrow’s Day of the Dead. The Incas used to bring their mummies out for celebrations; now people here set a beer tent up in the cemetery to drink with the dearly departed. The conquistadors marveled at the volume of urine produced during night-long fiestas spent drinking vast quantities of chicha, a local corn beer. Inca towns have diverted streams to run in gutters down the streets, keeping things fairly sanitary.
